Les Trois Vallees: one week in the freeride paradise

As a passionate winter sport lover, each year I spend a week snowboarding and skiing in the Alpes. It is always a great trip that I eagerly await the hole year. We are a group of 15-20 friends and each year we gather from different parts of Europe for a week of active sport and psychical relax.

In 2017, we decided to go to Les Menuires, which is part of the Les Trois Vallées ski area. Les Trois Vallées is advertised as “The World’s largest ski area”. It consists of 600 km interconnected ski runs that spread in three valleys. It is also said that this is one of the best place for freeriding in Europe. And yes, we had some amazing days of riding! 😊

We stayed in two apartments in “Les Chalets du Soleil” – a cozy apart-hotel which gives you all the necessary to have a good time. It also have a good ski-rental house where you can rent good gear at a decent price. At an altitude of 2000 m. “Les Chalets du Soleil” have one of the most beautiful views of the station with the ski slopes in front of your eyes. As it is a ski-in ski-out hotel we were just on the ski slopes, which saves you a lot of time and is so useful.

Just near the hotel there was a restaurant, a store with all you need for eating and local shop where you can take typical French food like fondue, raclette and charcuterie, and they also borrow you the “equipment” needed. So, as you can imagine, we didn’t stay hungry. 😉 In Les Menuires there are free shuttles that circle in every 20 minutes so you can easily go to the center to find a bigger supermarket or just to have a walk.

The slope in Les Trois Vallees are countless, so you can ride for a whole week without repeating the same slope twice.

And while you are riding, there are breathtaking landscapes.

But, we were searching for something else – the powder! 😊

As in whole Europe this winter was hot with no so much of snowfall, we had the change to have 2 days of snowfall. It was snowing for about 48 hours and when it stopped there was around 30cm of fresh snow.

And we were happy – we had the possibility to ride in powder on untouched slopes.

We found some really good spot, where even our big group could find some fresh lines.

Les Trois Vallées is a great place for freeriding. There are countless spots where you can go and have amazing rides.

Several times we followed some locals ski guides that took us to incredible places deep in the mountain. It was fantastic to enter from one place of the mountain and to exit to a completely different spot. It was a great fun and we enjoyed it so much.

The biggest problem in riding in such a popular freeride resort is that almost everyone is doing off-piste. I was amazed that on the second day after the snowfall all, I mean all possible place for riding were drawn by millions of traces. It was unbelievable how so many spot can be ridden.

The French definitely know how to party. The after-ski parties on the slopes are amazing. We run to a place in Val Thorens called “La folie douce” or The Tender Craziness. The slogan of this place was “Food and clubbing in Val Thorens” and it definitely replies to the atmosphere – the cuisine is delicious and the parties are WOW like in a real club – with great DJs, flawless sound and incredible atmosphere. It is a perfect end of a day full of riding. You have a delicious plate, listen to high quality music and enjoy the atmosphere.

We had a great week and we loved this resort. For the next year we are planning to repeat the same trip.
